Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, has increased the price of all dose strengths in the UK to align with prices across mainland Europe. This change means that in the UK, Wegovy is now a more cost-effective GLP-1 treatment option for weight management.

Mounjaro® is an injectable medication that comes in a pre-filled pen. It needs to be used once weekly, on the same day. The pen itself is simple to use and the needles are very small, so it’s relatively pain-free and easy to get used to.

Mounjaro® can be injected in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm at any time during the day, with or without food. It’s recommended that you use it around the same time each week — this will regulate the medication’s effectiveness.

Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is an injectable weight loss drug for people with a BMI over 30. For individuals with weight related health concerns, they may be eligible with a BMI over 27. These related concerns include high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and raised cholesterol.

If you have Type 2 diabetes and a BMI less than 27, we can’t prescribe you Mounjaro® for weight loss.

Everyone’s journey with Mounjaro is unique. You’ll begin with a low starting dose (2.5 mg once a week) to help your body adjust comfortably. From there, your dose may increase gradually over time — but there’s no single “right” pace or target.

Our clinical team will check in with you regularly to see how you’re responding and feeling. Some people find they’re reaching their goals and tolerating treatment well at a lower dose, while others may benefit from stepping up. What matters most is finding the dose that works best for you — balancing comfort, results, and your personal health goals.

We’ll also review your progress to make sure Mounjaro is delivering meaningful results for you before continuing treatment.

When you order Mounjaro® for the first time, you’ll receive 1 pen that includes each of your 4 doses for your first 28 days of treatment. It’s important to store it in a refrigerator between 2-8°C. Mounjaro® comes in a single-dose pen that requires no mixing. You’ll also receive:

• A sharps bin with your first order

• 4 needles (One to use for every time you inject)

• Swabs to clean your skin before injecting

• An instruction leaflet

• Extra tips to help you lose weight

With each new order, you’ll receive your next pen at the right strength for you.

You’ll begin on a low starting dose, taken once a week. From there, you can move up gradually or stay where you feel comfortable, and your clinician will review your choice and confirm it’s safe and sustainable for you.

Over time, some people choose to reduce their dose to maintain results or manage side effects.

You’ll receive a sharps bin with your first order. This is a special waste bin that’s used to store sharps material, like needles, until it can be safely disposed of.

After every use, dispose of the needle into the sharps bin. After the 4 doses, and once the needle has been removed, the pen can be disposed of in your household waste or the sharps bin. When full, your sharps bin can be collected for disposal by your local council.

Once you’ve started treatment, you’ll be able to purchase more sharps bins with new orders.

Mounjaro® can be kept unrefrigerated for up to 30 days. However, we recommend you return the pen to the fridge after each use.

While Mounjaro has helped many people reach their health goals, it’s crucial to understand what to watch for along the way. Below, we’ve outlined the most common and rare side effects, along with guidance on when to seek help.

Very common

These side effects may occur in more than 1 in 10 people and usually go away over time. They are most common when first starting Mounjaro and when increasing the dose.

• Examples: feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation.

Common

These side effects may occur in up to 1 in 10 people.

• Examples: dizziness, a reduction in blood pressure, indigestion, heartburn, bloating, burping, flatulence, fatigue, injection site reactions (redness, swelling), gallstones, allergic reaction (e.g, rash, itching, and eczema), low blood pressure, hair loss.

Uncommon

These side effects may occur in up to 1 in 100 people.

• Examples: Injection site pain, changed sense of taste, increased heart rate.

• SERIOUS: acute pancreatitis. This is inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe stomach pain which can radiate to your back that doesn’t go away. Most patients feel very ill with pancreatitis and may present with severe vomiting (i.e., vomiting 3 times or more in one day, or having coffee ground or blood in the vomit). You should call 999 or attend A&E right away if you experience these symptoms.

• SERIOUS: acute gallbladder disease. This is inflammation of the gallbladder (also known as cholecystitis) that can cause a sudden sharp pain in the upper right side of your stomach that radiates towards your right shoulder. The affected area of the stomach will feel very tender and deep breathing can make the pain worse. You should call 999 or attend A&E right away if you experience these symptoms.

Rare

These side effects may occur in up to 1 in 1000 people.

• SERIOUS: severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). This can present as difficulty breathing, swelling of lips, tongue and/or throat, difficulty swallowing, rapid heartbeat. You should call 999 or attend A&E right away if you experience these symptoms.
